How to tighten them
- Clean any dirt or rust off the studs, the nuts and the wheel’s mounting face. Don’t oil them unless the manual says to.
- Thread every nut on by hand until it seats against the wheel.
- Lower the vehicle so the tire takes its weight, and set a torque wrench to the value for your version in the table above.
- Tighten the nuts in a star pattern, going around two or three times, until the wrench clicks on every nut.
- Check the torque again after a short drive if your manual says to.
What the Ram manual adds
- Use only authorized dealer recommended lug nuts/bolts and clean or remove any dirt or oil before tightening.
- Do not oil wheel studs.
- NOTE: Dual wheels are flat mounted, center piloted. The lug nuts are a two-piece assembly. When the tires are being rotated or replaced, clean these lug nuts at the interface between the lug nut/bolt and the washer.
- Tighten the lug nuts/bolts in a star pattern until each nut/bolt has been tightened twice.
- After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut/bolt torque to be sure that all the lug nuts/bolts are properly tightened.
- After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut/bolt torque to be sure that all the lug nuts/bolts are properly seated against the wheel.
- Dual wheels are flat-mounted and center-piloted. The lug nuts are a two-piece assembly. When the tires are being rotated or replaced, clean these lug nuts at the interface between the hex and the washer.
- Using the wheel wrench, finish tightening the wheel nuts using a crisscross pattern.
- If in doubt about the correct tightness, have them checked with a torque wrench by your authorized dealer or at a service station.

Questions
What is the lug nut torque on a Ram 3500?
130 lb-ft (176 N·m) for Cone nuts (2012–2026); 134–149 lb-ft (182–202 N·m) for Dual rear wheels (2024–2026); 129 lb-ft (175 N·m) for Flanged nuts (2012–2026); 145 lb-ft (197 N·m) for Dual rear wheels (2010–2011); 135 lb-ft (183 N·m) for Single rear wheels (2010–2011), as printed in Ram’s owner’s manuals (2010–2026).
Can I use an impact wrench?
Not to finish. An impact wrench can’t set a torque and easily overshoots it, which stretches studs. Run the nuts down by hand or lightly, then finish with a torque wrench in a star pattern.
Should I oil the studs?
Not unless the manual says so. Torque values assume clean, dry threads; oil lets the same torque stretch the stud further. Some manuals, Kia’s and Mazda’s among them, say to keep oil and grease off wheel nuts and bolts altogether.
