How to tighten them

  1. Clean any dirt or rust off the studs, the nuts and the wheel’s mounting face. Don’t oil them unless the manual says to.
  2. Thread every nut on by hand until it seats against the wheel.
  3. Lower the vehicle so the tire takes its weight, and set a torque wrench to the value for your model year and version in the table above.
  4. Tighten the nuts in a star pattern, going around two or three times, until the wrench clicks on every nut.
  5. Check the torque again after a short drive if your manual says to.

What the Ram manual adds

  • Use only authorized dealer recommended lug nuts/bolts and clean or remove any dirt or oil before tightening.
  • Do not oil wheel studs.
  • Tighten the lug nuts/bolts in a star pattern until each nut/bolt has been tightened twice.
  • After 25 miles (40 km), check the lug nut/bolt torque to be sure that all the lug nuts/bolts are properly seated against the wheel.
  • NOTE: Dual wheels are flat mounted, center piloted. The lug nuts are a two-piece assembly. When the tires are being rotated or replaced, clean these lug nuts at the interface between the lug nut/bolt and the washer.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts to final torque in increments. Progress around the bolt circle, tightening the wheel nut opposite to the wheel nut just previously tightened until final torque is achieved.
  • Using the wheel wrench, finish tightening the wheel nuts using a crisscross pattern.
  • If in doubt about the correct tightness, have them checked with a torque wrench by your authorized dealer or at a service station.

Questions

What is the lug nut torque on a Ram 1500?

130 lb-ft (176 N·m) for 2012–2018 (Cone nuts), 2020–2027; 129 lb-ft (175 N·m) for 2012–2018 (Flanged nuts); 130 lb-ft (177 N·m) for 2010–2011, as printed in Ram’s owner’s manuals (2010–2018, 2020–2027).

Can I use an impact wrench?

Not to finish. An impact wrench can’t set a torque and easily overshoots it, which stretches studs. Run the nuts down by hand or lightly, then finish with a torque wrench in a star pattern.

Should I oil the studs?

Not unless the manual says so. Torque values assume clean, dry threads; oil lets the same torque stretch the stud further. Some manuals, Kia’s and Mazda’s among them, say to keep oil and grease off wheel nuts and bolts altogether.
