How to tighten them
- Clean any dirt or rust off the bolts and the wheel’s mounting face. Don’t oil them unless the manual says to.
- Thread every bolt in by hand until it seats against the wheel.
- Lower the vehicle so the tire takes its weight, and set a torque wrench to the value for your version in the table above.
- Tighten the bolts in a star pattern, going around two or three times, until the wrench clicks on every bolt.
- Check the torque again after a short drive if your manual says to.
What the Fiat manual adds
- Use only your authorized dealer recommended lug nuts/bolts and clean or remove any dirt or oil before tightening.
- Tighten the lug nuts/bolts in a star pattern until each nut/bolt has been tightened twice.
- Alternate bolts until each bolt has been tightened twice.
- If you doubt that you have tightened the bolts correctly, have them checked with a torque wrench by your authorized studio or service station.

Questions
What is the lug nut torque on a Fiat 500?
74 lb-ft (100 N·m) for Aluminum wheels (2016–2019); 66 lb-ft (90 N·m) for Steel wheels (2014–2019); 75 lb-ft (100 N·m) for Aluminum wheels (2012–2015); 63 lb-ft (85 N·m) for Steel wheels (2012–2013), as printed in Fiat’s owner’s manuals (2012–2019).
Can I use an impact wrench?
Not to finish. An impact wrench can’t set a torque and easily overshoots it, which stretches studs. Run the nuts down by hand or lightly, then finish with a torque wrench in a star pattern.
Should I oil the wheel bolts?
Not unless the manual says so. Torque values assume clean, dry threads; oil lets the same torque stretch the bolt further. Some manuals, Kia’s and Mazda’s among them, say to keep oil and grease off wheel nuts and bolts altogether.
